Mira Murati, Former CTO of OpenAI launches new AI startup

Few months after her unexpected resignation from her CTO position at OpenAI, Mira Murati has launched a new startup. The new company where Mira Murati holds the CEO position is called Thinking Machines Lab. She published the news on Tuesday, February 18 on her personal X account where she explained the aim behind this initiative.

What is the new company all about?

According to their website (thinkingmachines.ai), the startup is an artificial intelligence research and product company. Meanwile Murati stated that she and her team are focused on building 3 things:
– Helping people adapt AI systems to work for their specific needs
– Developing strong foundations to build more capable AI systems
– Fostering a culture of open science that helps the whole field
Considering the first point, it seems that Murati and her team are giving more priority to the user and their adaption to the new technology. What’s more interesting to me from this list, is the last point saying “open science”. Does that equal to “open source”? It is something we will discover soon!

The team

While Thinking Machines Lab is open to new applications and members, the current team of 29 members is pretty impressive. They have an extensive experience in some of the biggest tech companies in the world like Meta (former Facebook), Netflix, Stripe, Google or OpenAI. An interesting factor that I noticed was that 72% of the current Thinking Machines Lab team members have previously worked at OpenAI. Considering the sudden resignation of Mira Murati from her CTO position at OpenAI and other issues inside the company, it looks like a new movement that might be aiming to give a new direction to the way things are done in this quick paced field. Personally I see the new startup as a strong future opponent of OpenAI that has a lot to offer.

Mira Murati has given a great contribution to the AI field during her 6 years of work at OpenAI. I believe that with the new startup she will offer a lot more, considering her extensive experience and the team she is working with. Last but not least, as a woman in tech she is becoming a greater role model for the growing number of women in tech!
